& ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER

Core Training Program
(12 weeks) 7:00 pm –– 9:30 pm

An ever-increasing number of Washington area students are struggling with the demands of the academic work required to succeed in school. For students with educational disabilities, traditionally effective teaching and tutoring strategies are usually not enough. Strategies That Work is a comprehensive tutor training program for those interested in cutting edge strategies for working with students with educational disabilities. The course is designed by William R. Stixrud, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist and expert on the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Dr. Stixrud's work focuses on understanding brain development and the neuropsychological processing that underlies learning problems. The course is taught by Dr. Stixrud and highly experienced tutors who teach in their areas of expertise.
William R. Stixrud, Ph.D.
Dr. Stixrud has been in private practice as a neuropsychologist for over 20 years, and has offered specialized tutoring services for over 15 years. In addition to his private practice in Silver Spring, Maryland, Dr. Stixrud is a member of the clinical faculties at Children's National Medical Center and George Washington University Medical School. He has lectured widely at local private and public schools, as well as to parent and professional groups here and around the country.
Who Should Attend?
- College educated adults who want to train for a new career
- Teachers who want to be more effective with students who struggle
- Experienced tutors who seek increased sophistication in their work with students with educational disabilities
- Parents who home school or work with their children
Those who complete the training will be prepared to work successfully as professional tutors and/or apply the techniques in small groups or one-on-one in a classroom. The course is 12 classes. These classes are Tuesday evenings from September 9 to December 4, 2008. The makeup snow date will be December 3, 2008. Participants will receive a binder with course outlines and supplemental materials. Some reading will be required between sessions. At the completion of the course, participants will:
- Understand the latest neuropsychological models of
learning, attention, and executive function disorders
- Have a model for understanding the strengths and
weaknesses of their students
- Understand how people acquire the skill of reading and
the processes that interfere with its fluent acquisition (dyslexia and other reading difficulties)
- Learn specific approaches for improve reading
comprehension of fiction and non-fiction
- Learn to apply a series of step-by-step
methodologies for teaching students to organize and
produce clear comprehensive written work
- Develop strategies to help students experience more
interest in and motivation to do their work
- Develop strategies for building relationships with students
who have been frustrated and discouraged about
learning
- Learn behavioral techniques for helping students become
more efficient in planning and completing their work
- Develop strategies for the planning, development, and day
to day management of a successful tutoring practice
Location: This year the course will be held in Bethesda at St. Bartholomew School, 6900 River Road, Bethesda, MD 20817.
Tuition: $1000 ($950 if paid by 8/31/08)* (There are no reduced rates for attending fewer sessions. This comprehensive training is designed to be attended in its entirety.)

ADVANCED MENTORING PROGRAM
We also offer an Advanced Mentoring Program. It consists of:
- 14 hours of additional training and mentoring by very experienced tutors,
The 2008 Advanced Mentoring Program sessions will be held two Tuesdays a month for three months:
January 6 & 20, February 3 & 17, March 3 & 17, with the final session to be held on March 31. All sessions will run from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Location: Silver Spring, Maryland. Details to be provided upon registration
Tuition: $500 ($450 if paid by 8/31/08)
The Advanced Mentoring Program is open to anyone who has completed our Strategies That Work Core Training program, and is required of anyone who wishes to apply to become a tutor with William R. Stixrud, Ph.D. Tutoring Services (see below).
