Tutoring Services
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
|
|
When and where does the tutor meet with my child? Whenever and wherever is most convenient for you, and mutually agreed upon between the tutor and you. Some tutors see clients in our office, some work with students during the day at their school (when permitted), some work out of their home, and some will travel to your home. Each session is approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
What subjects and skill areas do your tutors address? Our tutors work with students from the early elementary grades through middle school, high school, and into college. Much of our tutoring focuses on improving skills in reading and written language, and on facilitating the acquisition of organizational, study, and test-taking skills. We also have tutors who specialize in math and in other traditional academic subjects such as English and literature, science, and social studies.
Do you have tutors who can help my child prepare for the SAT? Yes, we have tutors that can help your child prepare for the SAT or ACT.
Who are the tutors and what sort of backgrounds do they have?
Our tutors possess a wealth of experience and knowledge, and represent a wide array of specialties. Each of our tutors has a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, as well as specialized training through our Strategies That Work tutor training program. Dr. Stixrud created this program, which is offered annually, to train tutors in cutting-edge approaches for remediating academic difficulties.
Stixrud tutors also receive ongoing education and support, including in-service workshops from Dr. Stixrud and his associates. Additional training and expertise is gained from the Wednesday evening lecture series offered by William R. Stixrud, Ph.D., & Associates, as well as from other professional seminars and workshops that offer new information on techniques, strategies, and tools.
What are the costs associated with tutoring?
Tutoring fees generally range from $60 - $100 per session:
Fees for school conferences, telephone appointments, consultations with other professionals, and written reports are charged on a pro-rated basis according to your tutor’s per session fee.
If the tutor travels to your student’s school or to your home, the tutor may charge a travel fee of $5 to $15 per session.
There is an annual administrative fee of $50. The administrative fee does not pay for SAT or ACT preparation books or for Phono-Graphix® and certain other materials. The tutor will request that you purchase these items separately or reimburse him or her directly.
Tutoring costs are not covered by traditional health insurance, as tutoring is not considered to be medical or mental health treatment. However, the cost of tutoring may be a covered expense if your company has a Flexible Spending Account or a Cafeteria type plan.
Are we obligated for a certain length of time? Not really. We do, however, expect reasonable notice (2 weeks) if you do desire to discontinue tutoring.
